Lee was called "peg-leg" by everyone in the family. In his youth, he had
lost one leg and 1/2 of the other foot in a rail accident. It was reputed
to have been caused by being trapped in a refrigerated car while riding
the rails, although this has never been verified. I can remember him
showing up periodically at my grandmother's house, his sister, in Kelso,
Washington. This was the cause of much celebration by the children in the
family, for Uncle Lee was a real character. He was a fabled story-teller,
could play a mean fiddle, and was very creative with his hands - he
carved and made his own violins. I can remember him and my grandmother
having many spirited discussions, usually resulting in my grandmother
becoming very angry with him. He loved to talk and always
looked for a way to get into an argument. I remember that he convinced my
mother that my brother Don should take violin lessons. He carved my
brother a violin and I can remember my brother taking lessons for years.
Several of his violins are owned by my uncle Bob Hendrick. Lee was an
accomplished artist. Most of his work is of railroad scenes and are
almost graphic illustrations. He was much taken with my Aunt Doris Lee
Hendrick's artistic capabilities and he greatly influenced her. It is
rumored that he was married and had a daughter but no one can verify this
as he kept his private life a secret from all. Several family members
have claimed to see him panhandling, with his hat filled with pencils
and, sans his peg-leg, playing the violin on the street corner of some
      major city.
