    Notes
    • From: Allan Horrocks
      Notes from my mother:

William and Mary M. Taylor were married in Wisconsin, went by train to
Denver, Colorado then by stage to Leadville, Colorado where he became
      sheriff.

Notes from letters written by Mary Taylor to her granddaughter Doris Lee
      Hendrick in the 1940's:
Will and his brother, Joe, came to Jordon, Wisconsin to setup and operate
a cheese factory. Will boarded with her uncle, Miner Taylor, and his
wife, Nora. Mary was teaching school in the district and was also
boarding at her uncle's. They meet in May and were married in December of
the same year. After their marriage, they left Lena, Illinois by train
for Denver, Colorado where they took a narrow-gaged train to Weston and
then a sleigh to Leadville. Will's brother John lived in Malta, Colorado
(where the first gold at Leadville was taken) and John had an old house.
They lived with John until Will remodeled the old house to make it
      suitable.

The following is an article taken from the Kimball, Nebraska newspaper:

William Nelson will be the topic of the Plains Historical Society meeting
      tuesday.
William Nelson of Kimball County will be the subject of a talk at the
meeting of the Plains Historical Society tuesday morning. The meeting
will be held in the multi-purpose room at the Mary Lynch Grade School
srarting at 9:30 AM. Coffee and donuts will be served.
The life of Mr. Nelson and his agricultural exreriments here will be
related by his daughter Mrs. Ralph Dillon. Mrs. B.R. Kelso will
demonstrate her old cylinder model phonograph purchased in 1913. Mr.
Nelson came to Kimball county in 1908 and purchased a farm ten miles
northeast of Kimball. He had faith in the country and conducted extensive
agricultural experiments to show that a variety of crops and vegetables
would grow here. His work helped many people in this area make a success
      of farming.

The following is a physical description of Will Nelson and is provided by
      his wife Mary (Taylor) Nelson:
"He was one of the handsomest men I have ever saw. Tall (only 5'10
1/2" but looked 6'-everyone took him for that), straight as an arrow,
with lovely blue eyes, straight nose and dark brown hair. He always wore
a moustache, which was also dark brown. His charm was his conversation.
He had what is called an expressive face. His whole face laughed when he
laughed. Of an Irish father and a German mother. He was a typical
Irishman, quick to get offended and equally quick to forgive. Never got
so mad that a few kind words wouldn't blot it all out. Never swore or
drank. Could make friends with anyone and hold them.
You ask where you get your shortness, it shows you to be of Taylor
descent. Generally speaking, the Taylors are all short. My father was
only 5'7". Aunt Mary, his sister was only 5' and wore a number 1 shoe.
She was so proud of being small. My oldest girl, Mamie, was 5'2" and both
Grace and Ruth are the same. The tall part of my family is from my
mother's side. Her father (John Stevens) was 6'2". "
