Ruth (Irish) Preston, born 6-26-1850, (a great, grand-daughter of Jonathan and Ruth Irish) says her grandfather, Frederick Macy Irish, (who lived until she [Ruth] was 15 years old) said that his father, Jonathan, in 1784 followed the Jenkins group who left Nantucket, Mass. in 1783 and founded Hudson, N. Y. The boys returned to Natucket and became sailors. She says she has a little book published in 1862 called "Historical Sketches of Hudson", in which the name of Jonathan Irish appears as one of the early group in Hudson, N. Y. Shortly after the Revolution, a colony left the Island of Nantucket and settled at Hudson, N. Y. They were all sea-faring families. With this colony comes Jonathan and Ruth Irish, the parents of Frederick Macy Irish and 5 other sons and 6 daughters. The oldest son returned to the sea, and was drowned near Java. (P. 457-8 History of Johnson Co., Iowa 1883). Notes from Ruth (Irish) Preston says Jonathan and his wife, Ruth, in their declining years, went to live with their daughter, Betsey Townsend in Auburn, N. Y. and Jonathan died there. After his death, his wife, Ruth with some members of the Townsend family moved to Newtown, Long Island and she died there 6-15-1850. The Friends notes state he had a removal certificate from Hudson to Farmington, N. Y. dated 6-26-1804. Then they moved to Scipio, CAyuga County, N. Y. where they owned an estate, and then to DeRuyter, Madison County, N. Y. in 1825. David and Benjamin were residing in Scipio as early as 1795 and Elder David, the Baptist minister died there. Ruth (Irish) Preston says she personally knew a David A. Irish, (born 8-3-1850) of Quaker Hill, N. Y., - a cousin of the father. He married Phebe M. Hallock and lived in Yorktown, N. Y.

I have long looked for 'Oblong, Dutchess Co., NY'. Here is a description; The Oblong was a border district between New York and Connecticut. It was 2 miles wide and stretched from Ridgefield, Connecticut, northward for 50 miles to the Massachusetts line. Originally in dispute, Connecticut gave up its claim to the land in 1731. The area today is in Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess Counties (Dover is in Dutchess Co.).
