    • A Frightful Accident.

Last Monday occurred a fearful and almost fatal accident in this city. Mr. J. Irish, with his daughter, Lillie, residing about seven miles west of Onaga, were coming to town in a road cart drawn by a stallion. As they passed the bridge on Leonard street a few rods south of the railroad tracks the horse frightened at the parasol held by Lillie became unmanageable and ran towards town at full speed, kicking fearfully at every jump. Parties at the depot who witnessed the runaway say that the horse kicked one foot over the cross-bar and broke it. When the flying horse and vehicle reached the main railroad track the occupants of the cart were thrown forward on the foot-rest of the cart, and at the crossing of the side track they were dropped out between the cart and the heels of the horse. Cut and bruised in a fearful manner they were left on the ground, Lillie on top of her father, unable to move. The horse ran up Leonard street to Third and was turned west on Third until it reached Hyman's store where it stopped.

It being 4 o'clock; the hour for the arrival of the west-bound train, many persons were at or near the depot, and Mr. Irish and his daughter were soon picked up and placed on cots in front of the new photograph gallery, and medical aid summoned. Dr. Chilcote being in town, he with Dr. Richardson were soon in engaged in examining and dressing the wounds. Lillie was cut badly about the mouth, and three teeth were knocked out. The cuts were quickly sewed up, and she was removed to the residence of her uncle, James Smith. At this writing her injuries though painful, are not thought to be dangerous.

While Lillie was being carried to the Smith residence, accompanied by on to the Physicians, Mr. Irish received attention by the other. He is thought to be more seriously hurt. He was cut to the bone on both sides of his face, and bruised fearfully. The mark of one wheel is traceable across on cheek bone. He too was carried to the Smith residence. Besides the injuries about the head and shoulders he shows symptoms of internal injury, is could not be determined at the first examination, but no broken bones could be discovered.

Looking all the circumstances it is a wonder that either one escaped death. As it is, Mr. Irish will probably be slow in recovering as he is well advanced in years and not of very rugged constitution.
