From: "Big Hollow, A Mountaintop History" Maplecrest, Windham, NY by Elwood Hitchcock, pub. Black Dome Press Corp, Hensonville, Greene Co., NY 1993. [Elwood Hitchcock was a local Historian. He wrote this book from his
memories growing up in Big Hollow.]
"The John Irish home was the first place up the Moutain Road on the right. John was a cobbler who repaired shoes and harnesses. He was tall and slim. His bench was by a window looking down the street in front of the store. The Irish family had once lived on the Davis farm on the Ridge Road to East Windham. Their three sons, Lewis, George and David, had walked the mile down the road to the school house near the Chatfield home. Later, they disposed of the farm and moved to the villiage property. . At one time when Gus Moseman was operating his store, he attended a revival meeting at the Free Methodist Church and was converted. He immediately threw all his tobacco products from the store into the creek. . Realizing there was a demand for tobacco, Mrs. Irish put a supply in her front room, behind John's cobbler's bench. Soon she added a small showcase of penny and nickel candies. She also began baking big delicious loaves of bread and selling them for ten cents a loaf. She was in business. The Irishes' front room was a warm, comfortable place to visit. Josie was a lovable little lady and John was a pleasant, agreeable cobbler. It was a welcome place to pause for a chat. . In time John and Josie became elderly people. John was ill for a long time before he died. Local people explained that he lingered on because he had so much vitality, but no one seemed to know what vitality was."
