Caroline is listed as a farmer in the 1871 census, and is listed as a hotel keeper in the business directory found on the 1878 map of Antigonish Co. by A. F. Church. She lived alone with her son John. I believe she was most probably a daughter of Luman and Mary (Keay) Atwater. If so, then I would interpret the 1861 census as indicating that she and her son were living at home with her parents. Perhaps she inherited the property occupied by Luman?
An 1818 land grant petition and map show the land to be in the correct place.
