    Obituary Ralph A. lrish
Started with Sheriff's Department in 1924
LEWISTON -- A former Niagara County sheriff during the days of bootlegging and moonshining, Ralph A. Irish, 90, of 101 Mohawk St., Lewiston, died yesterday (Dec. 29, 1984) in Mount St. Mary's Hospital. During a party commemorating his retirement in 1964, Irish said his tenure in the Sheriff's Department, as a deputy sheriff from 1924 to 1927, undersheriff from l927 to l929 and sheriff from 1929 to 1933, was "routine." "Our department was frequently called upon to assist federal authorities, but it was all 'routine' really -- none of the 'Untouchables' bang-bang excitement for us," he said. He was a deputy county clerk from 1955 to 1964 when he turned 70, the mandatory retirement age for his position. A native of Wilson, NY, he lived in Niagara Falls before moving to Lewiston II years ago. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 785, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows No. 8l, a life member of Elks Lodge No. 346 and a member of the Eagles Lodge, all in Niagara Falls. He also was very active in the Republican party. Irish is survived by two sons, Harold R. Irish of Lewiston and F. Lee Irish of Marietta, Oh; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He was the husband of the late Beulah (Bryning) Irish, and son of the late Herman and Rebecca (Grout) Irish. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. today at the Hardison Funeral Homes, inc., Ridge and Fourth streets, Lewiston. A private funeral service will be held at convenience of family, and a memorial service will be held at a time and place to be announced. Burial will be in Riverdale Cemetery.
