Notes |
- From: Allan Horrocks
Lee was a rancher. His ranch was up the Elk River, between Steamboat
Springs and Clark, Colorado. The family story is that he bought this
ranch with his winnings from gambling. He lived here from 1900 until his
death in 1951. The ranch was willed to the Steamboat Springs Hospital
with the proviso that they would care for him in his old age (when he
couldn't stay on the ranch unattended). They later sold the ranch to
outside interests. The writer was at the ranch in 1947, when he
accompanied his Grandmother (Clara Viola Hendrick) to a family reunion
with her sisters (Nelson). I don't remember Lee being very talkative, but
perhaps he just had nothing to say to a 15 year old - children should be
seen but not heard. The writer has copies of the letters he wrote to his
nieces over the period 1940-1950. He usually wrote to one and then the
girls passed them around to each other. In his writings, he did not
appear to be the kind of man who would be a gambler. He spoke of
carefully spending each dollar he earned.
