Notes |
- From: W. L. Irish - Buried in unmarked grave. He came with his parents to Dutchess County, New York prior to 1740 and was there in 1755; since he was a Quaker and "married out of meeting" [m.o.m.], he was disowned by the Quakers. They went to Danby, Vermont in 1768; to Canada in 1777 and then back in Feb. 1782 to Milton, Vermont, where he, togeather with Leonard Owen, Amos Mansfield, Absalom Taylor and Thomas Dewey were soon joined by Gideon Hoxie, Zebediah Dewey, Enoch and Elisha Ashley and others. In 1786, the first Town meeting was held in their home. On 11-30-1784 he sold 40 acres to Jesse and Mary Irish. On 6-13-1786 he sold 40 acres to Michael Vail.
- Gazetteer of Vermont, Hayward, 1849
Milton is bounded on the west by Lake Champlain, and is finely watered by the River Lamoille. The soil of the town is generally good. There are some places in Milton worthy of the traveler's notice. A little distance from the neat and flourishing village are the Great Falls, on the Lamoille. In the course of fifty rods the whole river falls 150 feet. About the middle of the rapid is a small island, by which the water passes on each side, with great violence and loud roaring. The scenery on the banks of the river is wild and beautiful. There are some mills on the river, and considerable trade on the lake. There is another pleasant village two miles west of the falls, called Checker-Berry. The settlement of Milton was commenced Feb. 15, 1782, by William Irish, Leonard Owen, Amos Mansfield, Absalom Taylor and Thomas Dewey, Enoch and Elisha Ashley, and others. The first settlers suffered many privations and hardships, but there is nothing in the early history which is peculiarly interesting."

Early Settlements. - Milton was first settled by William Irish, Leonard Owen, Amos Mansfield, Absalom Taylor and Thomas Dewey, in February, 1782. Irish located on what was afterwards the old stage road, in the east part of the town (which for convenience we will designate as the east road). After the road was opened, his house was some distance back from it. He died early in the century. The land is now owned, though not occupied, by John McIntyre, and is known as the Gary place.
