David F. Rand with his wife Sarah (Lindy) Irish Rand and children, Frank, Fred, Vel, Mina, and Phoebe arrived at Big Lake in 1893. David had swapped his farm near Pierre, Dakota Territory, for Eddie Fillmore’s place on the edge of Big Lake. They had been on the trip for nearly a month. It was nearly dark, and from the covered wagon it was hard to see the trail ahead in the deepening dusk. Suddenly a horse and rider appeared. "Are you the Rands? We have been expecting you. I am Charles McNeil Fillmore, Eddie’s father." He had been out on the trail every night for a week looking for them to arrive. He guided them to his home where they stayed over night. David planted his fields in the spring and in fall began threshing grain for others as well as his own.
Lindy and David had two more children; Ella Maude had a lovely voice and sang with the family at a Christmas church program before she died at 3 ˝ years of age. Raymond was last of their children. All the children went to Big Lake school.
David died June 1901 and was buried in Big Lake (Union Church Cemetery). Lindy stayed until 1908 when she went to Canada to homestead near her brother and son Fred. After the youngest son, Raymond, was married she lived with them a great deal, but came back to visit. She was in Rochester Minnesota when she died in August 1926, and was buried in Big Lake beside her beloved David. (Submitted by Nellie Snow Fryer)
Mrs. Sarah Melinda Rand, was born in New York State, Oct 23 1850. She was married Jun 18, 1869 to David F. Rand. They were the parents of eleven children. Five, who died while small children, and one son, Frank, who died in 1920. The others are Mrs. I.H. Snow, with whom she has been living for the last three years at Rochester, Minn. And Mrs. M. A. Ray also of Rochester. Mr. Fred Rand of Kellogg Minn. And R. R. Rand and J. C. Rand of Hardesty, Alberta Canada. She, with her husband and family, resided at Big Lake for many years. Her husband passed away June 25th 1901. She has one surviving sister, and many relatives and friends, to mourn her departure.
Mrs. Sarah Melinda Rand died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Irwin Snow, living on the Mayowood poultry farm, at noon today. She was born in New York state October 23, 1850, being 76 years of age at the time of her death. For the past three years she lived with her daughter here. She leaves two daughters, Mrs. Snow and Mrs. L. Elofson, Rochester, and three sons, Fred Rand, Kellogg Minn., and J. C., and Ray Rand, both of Alberta. Arrangements for the funeral have not yet been completed.
Mrs David Rand, whose funeral and burial were at Big Lake, recently, was a resident of this town for many years and upon the death of Mr Rand a number of years ago she went to live with her children living in Canada for a time. Later returning to Minnesota and settling in Rochester with her daughters. Mrs Rand was a staunch attendant of the Union church of this place during her residence here and was a woman of very fine personality, always a cherry word for those about her. Doing her work in a happy manner, making the very best of all her duties and she will always be remembered by her kind and cherry disposition. She leaves to mourn her passing, two daughters, three sons, several grandchildren and other relatives and a host of friends. Sincerest sympathy is extended the bereaved ones.
Nellie Snow Fryer was my grandmother.
I have other non-Irish information if you are interested.
