Obituary |
Robert R. Irish of Clarence, who founded two businesses, died Sunday in Millard Fillmore Hospital after suffering a stroke. He was 78.
Born in Buffalo, Mr. Irish was a graduate of Bennett High School and attended the University of Alabama, where he was a walk-on football player for the Crimson Tide under Coach Harold D. "Red" Drew, and the University of Buffalo.
He was a radio officer for the U.S. Maritime Commission during World War II, sailing aboard liberty ships in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
Mr. Irish had worked for the family business, RM Irish Coal Co., and in 1950 founded two of his own: Irish Welding Supply & Carbonic Corp. and Irish Propane Corp.
He was a former director of the national and state Propane Gas associations.
He was a member of the Buffalo Club, Park County Club and clubs in Alabama.
Mr. Irish had won many awards in golf, bowling and tennis.
Survivors include his wife, the former Marcia Woodhouse of Clarence; five daughters, Pam Bronkie, Laurie Jones, Victoria Wasson and Katherine, all of Clarence, and Holly Ryan of Eggertsville; and 15 grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday in Amherst Community Church, 77 Washington Highway, Snyder. Interment will be in Holland Cemetery and in Amherst Community Church's columbarium. |
